BDF Debate on Energy and Climate with CBSS Foreign Ministers

7 May 2009
Baltic Development Forum has the great pleasure of inviting you to a ½ day energy and climate seminar in connection with the Council of the Baltic Sea States (CBSS) Ministerial meeting on 4 June 2009 in Helsingør, Denmark.

On 4 June 2009 the Foreign Ministers of all countries members of the Council of Baltic Sea States (CBSS) will meet in Helsingør, Denmark. The Ministers have agreed to set aside one hour of their program for a debate in the auspices of Baltic Development Forum on how to make the vision of a Green Valley of Europe come true. This debate will be the starting point for a continued discussion on energy and climate between the participants. The seminar will take place from 08.30 to 12.00 a.m.

Background

During the parallel Danish Presidencies of the CBSS and Baltic Sea Region Energy Co-operation (BASREC), energy and climate change have been a joint priority not least with a view to the UN Climate Summit COP 15 to be held in Copenhagen in December 2009. The EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (BSR) and the EU’s support for an action plan to speed up energy interconnections in the Baltic countries have contributed to make energy a key regional priority.

As a basis for an enlightened dialogue on common challenges, possibilities and added value of joint action in the field of energy in the Baltic Sea Region, Baltic Development Forum has initiated a study on energy scenarios (elaborated with the support of Nordic Council of Ministers). The first results of the study will be presented at the seminar.

One vision of an enhanced regional energy co-operation is to create a “Green valley” of Europe. On the basis of a more integrated energy infrastructure and energy market, it would be possible to make full use of the many different competences, energy sources and technologies in the Region.
