Uffe Ellemann-Jensen, has been presented with the highest national order of Macedonia, the order “September 8”
The chairman of BDF, former Danish foreign minister Uffe Ellemann-Jensen, has been presented with the highest national order of Macedonia, the order “September 8”. At a ceremony in Skopje on February 10th, the president of the Republic of Macedonia, Dr. Gjorge Ivanov, said that the order recognizes Uffe Ellemann-Jensen as Macedonia’s great friend, acknowledging his personal contribution in the establishment of Macedonia-Denmark diplomatic ties, as well as his continual support to Macedonia since its independence, in particular as chairman of the EC Council of Ministera in early 1993 and as leader of the European liberals in the 90’es.

Krzysztof Skubiszewski, former Minister for Foreign Affairs of Poland, and member of Baltic Development Forum’s honorary board since our start in 1998, passed away on February 8th, 83 years old. He became the first foreign minister in the Poland that appeared after the end of communist rule – and he served on this post from 1989 to 1993. After that he served with the international court in the Hague, and was president of the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal from 1994 to his death. He was born in Poznan, and was a professor of law at the University there.

BDF at the Baltic Sea Action Summit in Helsinki In Helsinki the Baltic Sea was given a helping hand when the political leadership – Heads of State and Governments around the Baltic Sea – made the strongest political commitment so far to save the polluted Sea. Focus was on action. Time is for implementation, Matti Vanhanen, the Finnish Prime Minister said: - “tomorrow is the most important day – when we begin to implement our commitments”.

Report on the Balmorel training courseBaltic Development Forum had the pleasure of inviting energy experts from the Baltic Sea Region to a one week introductory course on “Energy Scenario Analyses with the Balmorel model”. The course was organised in cooperation with the consultancy company Ea Energy Analyses, and took place in Copenhagen, Denmark from 25th until 29th January 2010.

Heinrich Böll Foundation organised a Dinner Debate in Copenhagen in parallel with the COP 15: Baltic Development Forum was invited as speaker to present regional energy study. 13 December 2009, Baltic Development Forum’s Director Hans Brask was invited by the Heinrich Böll Stiftung (the Green Political Foundation) as speaker to a High-Level Dinner Debate on Regional Approaches to reduce CO2 emissions: The European Community for Renewable Energy & How the Baltic Sea Region Can Lead the Way to present regional energy study.

Northern Dimension Business Council – a new platform for dialogue with Russian businessWhen regional initiatives come from Russian partners - and even from Russian business community in our region - everyone should pay attention.
The new Northern Dimension Business Council (NDBC) has been established and two co-chairmen have been appointed: Mr. Tapio Kuula (CEO of Fortum) and Mr. Alexey Mordashov (CEO of Severstal). BDF welcomes strongly this new initiative.

Denmark and the EU BSR StrategyBDF will co-host a seminar on the EU Baltic Sea Region Strategy for interested Danish parties. The seminar will take place on 1 September 2009 in the Danish Foreign Ministry’s premises in Copenhagen. It’s a joint arrangement between BDF, the Foreign Ministry of Denmark, the EU Commission in Denmark and Danish Regions.

Breakfast Meeting with Commissioner PiebalgsThe European Commissioner for Energy, Mr. Andris Piebalgs, has high hopes for the Baltic Sea Region, but the potential is unexploited in the field of energy collaboration: Thanks to its positive homogeneity, the region could be a showcase for the rest of Europe. The positive experience and the best practice of the Baltic Sea Region could even be transferred to other regions in Europe, mentioned Commissioner, during an informal breakfast meeting hosted by Baltic Development Forum.

The Nordic Council of Ministers supports the energy project on enhanced cooperationThe Nordic Council of Ministers decided to allocate 600 000 DKK for the elaboration of a report on enhanced energy cooperation in the Baltic Sea Region. The preliminary results will be presented at the BDF Summit this year, and the final project is to be ready by June 2009.

The report also points out that the convergence in the Baltic Sea Region is progressing, but needs more effort.

Formal Agreement on Fehmarn Belt BridgeBDF welcomes the formal agreement between the Danish Minister of Infrastructure Carina Christensen and her German counterpart Wolfgang Tiefensee on building the Fehmarn Belt bridge by 2018.

Lennart Meri Conference The Baltic Development Forum Chairman Uffe Ellemann-Jensen closed the Lennart Meri Conference in Tallinn 30 March. Ellemann-Jensen underlined Lennart Meri's great importance for the development of Estonia as well as the Baltic Sea Region. Before his decease Lennart Meri was a respected member of the Baltic Development Forum Honorary Board and a speaker at the first BDF Summit in Copenhagen 1999.

Among the names from the Region are for example Christina Hvid from Denmark, Anu Tali from Estonia, Ewa Sadowska from Poland, and Mattias Klum from Sweden.

EU InterBaltic Project issues Transport Strategy Master Plan The EU InterBaltic transport project, of which Baltic Development Forum has been an active partner, has been successfully concluded. The project recently developed a Draft Framework for a pan-Baltic Transport Strategy Master Plan with recommendations how to improve the infrastructure and transport sector in the Baltic Sea Region.

Swedish and Finnish Prime Ministers call for Common Strategy for the Baltic Sea RegionSpeaking at the 9th Baltic Development Forum Summit in Tallinn, Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt called for the countries of the region to unite and support regional strategy on environment, climate, and integration. The Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt announced that the Swedish government intends to launch an EU Baltic Sea Strategy during their EU Presidency in 2009. It will include improved cross border infrastructure, cooperation on R&D, innovation and cluster development, which are all areas that will spearhead further integration of the internal market.

Talents on Top of Europe, BerlinThe unique cooperation model used in the political field by the countries around the Baltic Sea needs to be extended to the public-private sector in order to increase the competitiveness and attractiveness of the Baltic Sea Region. This was one of the main conclusions reached by the leading representatives from business, government and research within the ICT and Life-Science at the seminar “Talents on Top of Europe” at the Nordic Embassies in Berlin on the 11th of June. Among the keynote speakers were: Danish Minister of Education, Bertel Haarder, President of the German Bundesrat and Minister President of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Dr. Harald Ringstorff, Senior Director of Siemens AG, Uwe Hermann.
