Metropolises – a Major Driving Force in the Baltic Sea Region?

A new marketing battle for tourism, inward investment and exports is becoming increasingly intense. The metropolises and regions in Europe and around the world are building and rebuilding their brands as they compete for tourism, inward investment and exports. It’s particularly important to understand that the regional, national and subregional image must be aligned with the reality. And when the reality changes the image has to change with it. Branding a new image is vital for the metropolises in an increasingly globalized world.

Baltic Development Forum intends to ask how to brand the Baltic Sea metropolises as new European centres for tourism, inward investment and exports? Moreover, what affects does a branding strategy have on the business community?

Jens Torpe, Chief Operating Officer, Metro International SA
Glocalization - Global-Local Partnership

Located at the crossroads between local and world trends, the city represents the socio-political unit that most effectively embodies the concept of glocalization. Glocalization combines global opportunities and local interests. Baltic Development Forum has invited Mr. Jens Torpe from Metro International S.A. – publisher of the Metro Express - to focus on the concept of “glocalization” and why it is that the Baltic Sea metropolises must have a global approach to the future.

Mr. Torpe has been asked to explain the idea of “glocalization” and to discuss in what way the Baltic Sea metropolises most effectively can apply the “glocal” approach as well as how the business community benefit from the “glocal” strategy?

Matti Ollinkari, City Secretary, City of Helsinki
Helsinki in the Global Market – Lessons to Learn

Through a clever and targeted strategy, Helsinki has turned out to be one of the most dynamic areas in Europe. In September 1994, Helsinki City Council approved the city's first ever internationalization strategy, beginning a process which has borne fruit in the memorandum "Helsinki Today - Policy Priorities for an International City" from 1999.

Baltic Development Forum has invited Helsinki's City Secretary to share his experiences with profiling Helsinki as a leading Northern European and Baltic Sea metropolis in Europe and globally. Matti Ollinkari has been one of the driving forces of the internationalization of Helsinki. He will be ask to outline Helsinki's strategy so far and to discuss where the cities of Northern Europe should place their efforts in the years to come.
