Baltic Development Forum arranged a roundtable discussion on the 14th December to kick off preparations for the Political State of the Region Report 2018. Special Guests, Vygaudas Usackas, (former Lithuanian Foreign Minister, EU-ambassador to Moscow and Lithuanian ambassador to Washington and London), and Ginte Damusis (Lithuanian Ambassador to Denmark & Iceland, Former Ambassador to Canada) was joined by an energetic group of writers, BDF Founder Uffe Ellemann-Jensen, Senior Advisor Per Carlsen and Director Flemming Stender, amongst other leading experts.
Per Carlsen led the roundtable, thanking sponsors Konrad Adenauer Stiftung for their support in creating the annual publication, now entering its seventh year, before inviting Usackas to give his view on developments in Russia, EU-Russia cooperation and the possibilities of regional cooperation in the Baltic Sea Region. Usackas was very realistic about the possibilities to work with Russia over the next seven years, citing ‘smart engagement’ as a key principle. New initiatives were also suggested within Nordic-Baltic cooperation. A lively Q&A session ensued!
